Sustaining Indonesian fishing communities

We are currently building sustainable fish nurseries, providing feed for grouper fish, and establishing fish cooperatives and links with local and regional markets.

We are currently building sustainable fish nurseries, providing feed for grouper fish, and establishing fish cooperatives and links with local and regional markets. We are also providing a generator and establishing fishing groups for local fishermen and women. Over the last three years we have also constructed a fishing jetty on Haloban Island, provided over 100 deep and shallow fishing devices, repaired 24 boats, 45 offshore cultivation systems, restored two sections of an ice storage warehouse, trained fishermen in different fishing skills and began breeding grouper fish. This project was funded by Multi Donor Fund (MDF) as part of the Aceh development scheme which aims to reduce poverty by offering sustainable economic support and skills for local livelihoods. Islamic Relief first began working in Indonesia in 2003 and supports communities by providing socio-economic development, water and sanitation, education, orphan, disaster preparedness and emergency response. We supported vulnerable communities in Indonesia with life-saving aid during the 2004 tsunami, the 2006 Java earthquake, and the 2009 Sumatra earthquake.
