Launching an emergency response to the spiralling humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Islamic Relief is calling on supporters to give generously to our dedicated appeal.

Many civilians have fled their homes amid the rapid escalation of conflict in Afghanistan. The situation, which began earlier this year, is now developing at breakneck speed.

The latest assessments indicate that already over 10,000 people have recently arrived in Kabul after fleeing their homes. With nowhere to stay, many are sleeping on the streets. Meanwhile in Nangarhar province around 28,000 people are thought to have fled homes in Kunar.

It is feared that many more families will be displaced as conflict spreads and the government loses control of more parts of the country.

“We are very concerned by the recent developments in Afghanistan,” says Mohammad Golam Sorwar, our Head of Programmes in Afghanistan. “Hunger has spread significantly, and it is affecting mostly vulnerable groups, including women and children.

“The internally displaced people live in dire conditions. With figures expected to increase, we are concerned the situation might escalate to a famine. We urge all sides to exercise self-restraint and call for an immediate ceasefire.”

Afghanistan’s deepening food crisis

The latest developments worsen an already grave humanitarian situation. After decades of conflict and political insecurity coupled with 3 devastating waves of Covid, drought has left 14 million people facing a food crisis.

Vulnerable people caught up in this deepening crisis are in urgent need of food and water, as well as hygiene supplies to help keep disease at bay, emergency shelter and survival items.

For over 20 years Islamic Relief has been delivering much-needed humanitarian and development assistance in Afghanistan. We are now launching a £5 million appeal with our initial response to the crisis focusing on Kabul, Balkh and Nangarhar as areas in which needs are particularly great.
