Pakistan Earthquake Appeal
Multiple fatalities and hundreds injured after earthquake.
Latest reports indicate 38 fatalities and 723 injured after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Pakistan.
The earthquake, which hit at 16.01 on Tuesday 24th September, was centred 1km south of Mirpur. Mirpur, Jatla, and the villages of Manda and Afzalpur are amongst the worst affected areas. Tremors were felt in various cities including Islamabad, Jhelum, Lahore, Swat and Abbottabad.
There has been significant damages to roads and homes. The Pakistani military have dispatched medical support teams to the area.
The full extent of the damage caused is not yet known at this stage, we expect the number of people affected and the extent of the damage to increase as more information becomes available.
Survivors urgently need humanitarian aid
The quake has destroyed or damaged homes. In Mirpur, where a state of emergency has been declared, several main roads and three major bridges have been badly damaged.
Rescue and relief efforts face challenging conditions, especially since rain and thunderstorms are expected in the hours ahead.
Islamic Relief has been able to rapidly launch a response to the disaster as we have been working in Pakistan for decades. On the ground in the affected areas, our emergency team will assess the scale of damage and find out how we can best help survivors.
We are working with other organisations, including the National Disaster Management Authority who are distributing vital items like tents, blankets, medical kits and bottled water.
