In rural areas of Kenya, families are struggling to survive.

Around a third of the country’s population live on less than €2 a day, whilst climate change is devastating the landscape.

Climate-induced drought is affecting people’s livelihoods and ability to provide basic essentials such as food and water for their families.

Meet Ebla: Caring for her grandchildren

Ebla from Kenya.

Ebla is an elderly lady living with her family in a makeshift house made from dry twigs and grass thatch in Abdi Gab village.

She says that many of the young, able-bodied men have migrated with their livestock in search of grassland and water. This means that the women and children have been left behind without livestock or milk, and with minimal access to food and water.

Sadly, the community hasn’t seen rainfall for the last two years. As a result, their biggest challenge is being able to access water and food.

Ebla dreams of the land of plenty and misses the fresh milk from her camels. Elba now depends on her children to send money back for the family but it sometimes takes them three months to return home, leaving the family vulnerable.

Ebla is currently taking care of her ten grandchildren hoping that it will rain and that their parents return to take care of them.

Amongst such difficulties, the Islamic Relief team are working hard to provide much-needed support.

We provided Ebla with a cash grant, enabling her to fulfil her family’s urgent needs. Of course, Elba was delighted:

This is the first time our village has received any support during these challenging times of drought.

The money has been beneficial to my whole family. I was able to buy food for my grandchildren. It’s been a long time since we had two meals a day. I was also able to buy some of the medicine I needed.

Thank you and I pray that you may never forget us because this drought has been hard on us. (Ebla)

Alhamdulillah! Thank you for supporting Ebla and her family, in addition to many more families in need across Kenya.

This Ramadan, feel their hunger. Let’s feel their struggle and come together as one.
